Ilha de Mozambique has been brought to world attention by it’s classification as a World Heritage Site. It was first settled by Arab traders in the 13th century and became the capital of the Portuguese colony of Mozambique until 1898 when this title was usurped by Lorenco Marques (now Maputo).
The island was strategically located and became an important trading post for all shipping in the Western Indian Ocean. It attracted merchants from all around the globe - Europe, Arabia, India, China and Indonesia. The influences from all these civilizations can still be seen in the customs, social practices, religion, language, dress, dance, cuisine and architecture of this amazing island. There are some fascinating old buildings to explore including the St Sebastiao Fortress, Palace Museum and the Chapel of Our Lady constructed in 1522. It is said to be the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere that is still standing!
A long, narrow concrete bridge built in 1960’s links the island to the mainland. There is plenty of pedestrian traffic going back and forth, this tiny island now has more than 12,000 residents! Flights arrive in Nampula 3 times a week and resorts can transfer clients by road to the island (150km).
